Up to ten cards in one WhatsApp message.
A carousel template puts two to ten media cards in one WhatsApp message, each with an image or video, a line of text and its own buttons. Send a blog roundup or a week of offers as one marketing template, and Meta charges for one message, not one per card.

Build the cards, then swipe them.
Write the message, choose image or video, and fill in each card: its picture, a line of text and its buttons. The phone shows the swipeable strip as you type. Add up to ten cards, duplicate the one you like, and submit the lot to Meta as one marketing template.

Swipe the cards on the phone. Another card, still one charge. Ten cards. That’s the limit. Two cards is the minimum. Video it is, on every card. Back to images on every card. Same buttons on every card. That’s your file on the card. Fix that first, then submit. Submitted to Meta. Approved. Ready to send.

Carousels are marketing templates, so contacts need marketing opt-in.
Shown above the cards. Use *asterisks* for bold, as WhatsApp does.
Every card has the same button types in the same order. Each card has its own labels and links.
JPEG or PNG, up to 5 MBYour file stays in this browser. Nothing is uploaded.
No footer: on a carousel the buttons sit on each card, not on the message.
Write the message body first.
Card 10 needs text on every button.
Card 10 has a button over 25 characters.

4 cards, one marketing message. Meta charges for one delivered template, not 4.

Submitted. Meta reviews the whole carousel as one template.
Approved. Send it from bulk sends, the Inbox, the Flowella API and HubSpot.
An approved carousel keeps its card count. For a different number of cards, build another template.

One message instead of a run of sends.
Many campaigns still go out as one marketing template per product, property or event. A carousel puts them side by side.
-
One charge for up to ten cards
Meta charges for one delivered marketing template, however many cards it holds. Five offers to 5,000 contacts is 5,000 marketing charges, not 25,000.
-
An image or video on every card
Show the product, the property, the venue or the course. Upload a JPEG or PNG up to 5 MB, or an MP4 up to 16 MB, for each card.
-
Buttons on each card
Up to two per card: quick reply, phone number or link. Every card uses the same button types in the same order, with its own labels and links.
-
Quick replies show which card won
When someone taps the quick reply on the third card, you know which offer they mean. Follow up with a WhatsApp Flow that collects the booking or enquiry.
-
The card structure is set once
Pick the media type and the buttons once and every card follows them, so the carousel meets WhatsApp’s rules. Duplicate a card to start the next one.
-
Sends wherever your templates do
Once Meta approves it, send the carousel from test sends, bulk sends, the Inbox, the Flowella API and HubSpot.

How many cards can a carousel have?
Between two and ten. The number is fixed when Meta approves the template: one approved with five cards always sends five, so build one template for each layout you use regularly.
Can cards mix images and videos?
No. All the cards in one carousel use the same media type: images (JPEG or PNG, up to 5 MB) or videos (MP4, up to 16 MB).
How many buttons can each card have?
Up to two, in any mix of quick reply, phone number and link buttons. Every card uses the same button types in the same order, but each card has its own labels, links and phone numbers.
How much text fits on a card?
Up to 160 characters under each card’s image or video, with personalisation variables, so a price, date or location sits right under the picture. The message body above the cards carries the main text.
Can a carousel have a footer?
No. A carousel has its message body and its cards, and the buttons sit on each card rather than on the message.
Sending and cost
Which category is a carousel?
Marketing. Carousels are a marketing template type, so contacts need marketing opt-in and each send is charged at the marketing rate. They won’t make order updates or reminders cheaper.
How much does a carousel save?
Meta charges for one delivered marketing template, not one per card. Five offers sent as five separate templates to 5,000 contacts is 25,000 marketing charges; sent as one five-card carousel it is 5,000, an 80 per cent reduction for the same reach. Sending fewer marketing messages per person also makes Meta’s per-user limit on marketing templates less likely to block delivery.
Where can I send an approved carousel?
From test sends, bulk sends, the Inbox, the Flowella API and HubSpot.
Do link buttons take people out of WhatsApp?
Yes, a link button opens the browser. To keep the next step in the chat, use a quick reply button and follow up with a WhatsApp Flow that collects the details for the card they picked.
